Laphroaig 18 Year Old springs from the rocky Islay soil nearly whole as an expression of the land itself, misted in floral peat smoke, vanilla, and magic.
Laphroaig distillery was founded in 1815 by Donald and Alexander Johnston and is located in Port Ellen, Isle of Islay. Although Laphroaig isn't allowed to put the prefix ‘Royal’ in its name (yet), rumour has it his royal princeness Charles of Wales is a fan of the ‘L’ Whisky.
If you like your Whiskey peaty and smoky, then you have already been drinking Laphroaig. Their classic 10-year is the standard by which the entire genre’ of Islay peated whiskeys is measured. But this is the 18-year, and it takes their signature flavor profile to a whole new level.
Islay is a special place. One can easily imagine the ancient Druids standing on the mainland catching glimpses of “Avalon” through the mist and chanting long-forgotten Gaelic spells. Perhaps it was Islay they gazed at across firth. Every spot on this island is close to the sea and the dense, salted spray of the North Atlantic. Laphroaig 18 spends eighteen years sequestered on this near, yet distant shore. That time mellows the power of their whiskey, calms the restless spirit within, sweetens it so that the peat gains an earthy—almost floral—quality.
