For the novice, and the connoisseur.

Port Askaig
is a small town on the northeast coast of Islay where it faces the island of Jura less than 1/2 mile away on the other side of the Sound of Islay. The Port Askaig Whiskies are a brand of Islay Single Malt Whiskies named after this picturesque town. London-based Specialty Drinks created the brand by collecting selected casks from some of the largest and most reputable Single Malt distilleries on the island and producing a series of independent Single Malt bottlings.

Port Askaig 110° Proof is aged in American oak barrels and bottled at 55% ABV. Like each of the expressions in Port Askaig’s range, they are released in limited batches which yield an unparalleled consistency and quality of character, that ensures each Whisky maintains its original flavor and dignity. Nonchill-filtered and naturally colored this exclusive release is the first of this unique range of Single Malt Whiskies from Port Askaig to launch in the US.

A boutique beauty

The origin being 'undisclosed distillery' is a term I'm unfamiliar with. I take that to mean sourced whisky which doesn't seem in sync with a single malt, but this doesn't disappoint. The price is also in line with a small batch which is why I consider it a boutique bottle. I don't know if I would by a bottle at $85, but a neat poor in the $15-25 range would be a pleasant deviation from my usual Islay preferences of Lagavulin 16 or something from Laphroig. The bottle suggested it was 100 proof, but everything else suggests 110 proof.
This is a smoke BOMB on the nose. Whoever described the color as amber may want to rethink that. It's the lightest sample in the Peat It Peat It v2 sampler, but the color is irrelevant to the quality within. There is also a hint of lemon zest on the nose, as if a match was lit and applied to the expressed oils of the rind.
The initial sip is a minty fruit mix with a medicinal quality. I would let this breathe as the smoke and high proof dominant the initial sip. Water helps bring out the more subtle flavors suggested by Port on the flavor wheel. Those being the clove, cinnamon, cocoa and licorice root (to name a few) that are suggested in the profile above. The finish is long but not unpleasant. Very well balanced for a high proof. Cheers!
